The Florida Gator football team, despite losing starting quarterback Treon Harris and several other players, hangs on to defeat East Carolina today 28-20 in the Birmingham Bowl in the final game of the year for both teams.
Florida (7-5) did a nice job offensively in the first half but stalled dramatically in the second half as the Gator defense, as it has had to do many times over the last few seasons, dug in and hung tough in allowing a lot of yards but also making key stops of the Pirate offense.
The biggest might have been with the Pirates driving to possibly tie the game inside the Florida 10 yard line with a little over a minute left in the game. Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves III got an interception to seal the Gator win.
Florida defensive back Brian Poole also had an interception return for a touchdown of 29 yards in the first quarter.
The Gator defense was torched for over 400 yards passing but in the end, made enough key plays to help Florida get the win.
Little used running back Adam Lane had a nice day for Florida with Matt Jones not playing in the game for Florida as Lane ran for over 100 yards in the contest.
Harris threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Ahmad Fullwood and also threw one for receiver Brandon Powell before getting injured.
East Carolina ends its season at 8-5.
