The Florida Gator football program under first year coach Jim McElwain closes fast as National Signing Day came to an end.
McElwain spoke today about the class that Florida assembled that includes two early enrollees and 18 other athletes that signed letters of intent. Not included as of this writing is one from defensive lineman Ce Ce Jefferson who made a verbal commitment to Florida but had not yet faxed in his official letter of intent.
Defensive lineman Byron Cowart made things interesting today. After pledging to Auburn on national television, reports surfaced that he actually had two letters of intent signed…one to Auburn and one to Florida. But in the end, he stuck with Auburn.
Florida was able to flip some other verbal commitments to other schools and it gained valuable recruits on the offensive line, a position in dire need of bodies because of lack of depth. The jewel of the six offensive linemen signed is five star rated prospect Martez Ivey from Apopka.
All but one of Florida’s signees are from either Georgia or Florida; the exception is athlete Kylan Johnson from Dallas, Texas.
Florida picked up two wide receivers in the class in early enrollee Kalif Jackson and Antonio Callaway from Miami. The Gators however did not sign a quarterback in the class but McElwain said there was a chance that one could come into the fold later because some scholarships could be made available to late signees.
