Florida finishes strong on National Signing Day, SEC hoops, an NFL player arrested locally and more in our Thursday Sports Update…
** New Florida football coach Jim McElwain signs a solid first class as National Signing Day came to a close Wednesday. Florida got 20 signed letters of intent and expect one today from defensive lineman Ce Ce Jefferson.
** For what it is worth at this time of year, the recruiting services have just about all named Alabama, USC, FSU as teams in the top five for the 2015 football recruiting cycle. Other teams mentioned are Tennessee, Clemson and Auburn.
** Green Bay Packer defensive lineman Letroy Guion was arrested in his hometown of Starke, Florida and charged with possession of pot and a gun after a routine traffic stop. The Packers say they are aware of the arrest.
** In SEC men’s hoops, Alabama tops Missouri 62-49 and Ole Miss cools off Texas A&M 69-59 in Oxford.
** Syracuse won’t be going to the postseason this year in basketball after the school self reports NCAA violations. The NCAA can either accept the proposal or impose stiffer penalties on the school.
** In the NBA, San Antonio downs Orlando 113-103 as the Magic suffer their 10th straight loss. Minnesota nips Miami 102-101. Orlando and Miami are off today.
