After dropping a big game at home Sunday against Tennessee, the Florida women’s basketball team (11-12, 3-7 SEC) are now in a must-win situation heading into its game against No. 24 Georgia (17-7, 5-6 SEC) Thursday night on the road.
Florida struggled with a familiar trend against the Vols, a poor second half performance. The Gators went into halftime with a two point lead then came out shooting 10-for-31 in the second half while turning the ball over 14 times.
Heading into Thursday’s game, the Gators have to overlook the history of the series. Florida has only defeated the Bulldogs 14 times in 64 meetings. They also are 4-27 in Athens. In last year’s road match up, Florida was defeated 67-58.
With only seven games remaining, Florida has to begin to play at a higher level. Despite the adversity surrounding the team, senior Kayla Lewis sees good things in the team’s future. The Georgia native scored her 1,000th point against Tennessee and said she saw her team play at a level that she’d never seen before.
“You see that we’re right where we are supposed to be. We have what it takes to play on the court with these teams and that we are just inches away from pulling that big upset,” said Lewis.
The team will match up against No. 24 Georgia twice, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 17 Mississippi State, No. 14 Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Alabama in their final regular season stretch.
