After head coach Jim McElwain said his players took a couple of steps back after Monday’s practice, he was content with their efforts when they returned to the practice field on Wednesday. “Bounced back and did have a heck of a practice today…it was the first time we worked goal line and that was really good,” McElwain said. With just a little over a week left of spring football, the Florida football team has limited time left to prepare until they meet once again in August. Gator Football Back On Track, Jake McGee Set For Return
especially at offensive line, the Orange and Blue debut will play out a little differently this year. The offensive line and defensive line will be limited to a certain amount of contact plays to avoid injury. McElwain still believes the game will remain competitive even though there won’t be two full teams. “We’ll have a lot of competition going on. There’s no doubt about it.” The start of last year looked promising for tight end Jake McGee. He came to Florida with a graduate-eligible status after getting his degree from the University of Virginia and he was going to be the feature tight end in Kurt Roper’s offense. Then in the first half of the season opener, McGee broke his tibia and fibula causing him to miss the entire season. The redshirt senior was able to pick up a medical redshirt, giving him one more crack at the college game. McGee was aware that McElwain’s offense used the tight ends often, but it did not play a huge role in his decision to return. “It wasn’t much of a factor. I knew how they used the tight end and I had seen some tape…I was just really looking forward to getting my feet back under me and really getting back out there.” McGee will be kept out of contact drills for the entire spring. He is still expected to play a huge role on the team, especially in McElwain’s offense which is loaded with two tight end formations. For him, it’s all about keeping a positive attitude. “For myself, I’m a pretty positive person. So it was easy to keep going and support the team and do anything I can do to help everyone else.” The Gators have three scheduled practices remaining this spring. All of them lead up to the Orange and Blue Debut on April 11.
