Following an opening night game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, Major League Baseball’s opening day will consist of 14 games throughout today.
In the American league, Tampa Bay’s home opener against the Baltimore Orioles will begin when Rays’ pitcher Chris Archer takes the mound. The Rays’ spring training has been plagued with injuries, leaving Archer with an opportunity to lead the rotation.
“I wouldn’t want a perfect spring training, because that’s unrealistic.” Archer said. “I got some quality work in.”
Rays’ third baseman Evan Longoria says the offseason work has paid off, saying the team has its own expectations of where it wants to be despite what so called experts believe.
Coverage for today’s game begins at 2:30 pm right here on ESPN850 WRUF.
Other American League match ups today include the White Sox traveling to Kansas City, the LA Angels taking on the Seattle Mariners, Toronto at the New York Yankees, Minnesota at Detroit and Texas facing Oakland. Cleveland will tangle with Houston.
Moving to the National league, the Miami Marlins will square off against the Atlanta Braves this afternoon. Both teams made several offseason moves in order to challenge the Washington Nationals in the NL East and today’s match up could reveal the benefits of restructuring rosters.
“I wish he were starting at home.” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said about starting pitcher Julio Teheran, who is getting his second consecutive opening day start for Atlanta.
The National league will also see Pittsburgh taking on Cincinnati, the LA Dodgers facing San Diego, the New York Mets at Washington, Colorado at Milwaukee and San Francisco at Arizona.
An interleague match up will also take place between the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon.
