We greet the start of a new month with World Cup news, MLB results, Wimbledon and more in our Wednesday Sports Update…
** The U.S. women’s soccer team advances to the finals of the World Cup Sunday after beating Germany 2-o yesterday. The USA will play the winner of England/Japan in the finals.
** Several sources are reporting today that Florida incoming freshman football player D’Anfernee McGriff will not be part of the 2015 class. He should be going to junior college. Meanwhile fellow freshman Keivonnis Davis reportedly must still pass a class in order to enroll at UF.
** Wimbledon continues today with only one major upset yesterday as women’s three seed Simona Halep is beaten. All the other top seeds advanced in men’s and women’s play.
** NBA free agency has officially begun. Former Gator Mike Miller isn’t going anywhere; he exercised his player option to return to Cleveland next year.
** In MLB action, Miami downs San Francisco 5-3 while Washington beats Atlanta 6-1 and Cleveland rocks Tampa Bay 6-2.
** Gator baseball players Aaron Rhodes, Mike Vinson and Harrison Bader have all now signed pro contracts. Four Gator signees have also gone pro but one second round pick, pitcher Brady Singer, has yet to sign.
