UF Football Gets Bad Injury News

As the Florida football team prepares for its season opener in eight days, the team got some bad news when it was learned that freshman offensive lineman Martez Ivey, a possible starter, will have surgery to repair an old leg injury.   There is no timetable for his return.

In other sports news…

** Florida football coach Jim McElwain reaffirmed that quarterbacks Treon Harris and Will Grier will play in the UF season opener against New Mexico State.

** The Florida soccer team gets three Savannah Jordan goals to beat Miami 4-2 Thursday; next up UF hosts defending national champion FSU on Sunday.

** The Gator volleyball team opens its season with an away match at James Madison on Saturday and one at American University on Sunday.

** High school football cranks up tonight with games all over the area.   Buchholz-Eastside, GHS-Columbia, Santa Fe-Newberry are a few of the games on tap.

** In baseball, Tampa Bay beat Minnesota 5-4 and Pittsburgh edged Miami 2-1.  This weekend, the Rays host Kansas City, Atlanta hosts the New York Yankees and Miami is at Washington.

** Former NBA star Darryl Dawkins died of a heart attack; he was 58 years old.
