The Florida football team moves to 2-0 on the season after hanging on to beat East Carolina 31-24 Saturday night in Gainesville.
Despite the win, Florida coach Jim McElwain was clearly upset and agitated in his postgame press conference, several times calling Florida’s performance “unacceptable” in the wake of the Gators committing 12 penalties totaling 105 yards on the night.
He also said players were “entitled” and he said he could tell even as early as Monday that his team was feeling too good about itself after a lopsided win last week.
In this game, Will Grier started at quarterback but Treon Harris also played. Grier was 10 of 17 for 151 yards and two touchdowns with one interception while Harris was 5 of 8 for 54 yards with no touchdowns. McElwain did not name a starter for next week’s game at Kentucky.
Florida on defense shut down a good Pirate run game but East Carolina did throw for 346 yards in the game. Florida only managed 373 total yards in the game.
The Gators will next play at Kentucky next Saturday night.
