Gators Hope To Improve Against Another SEC Foe
The No. 11 Florida Gators will look to keep the good times rolling as they prepare to face South Carolina in Columbia.
The Gators (8-1, 6-1) clinched their spot in the SEC Championship game but needed to dig deep to get the win last weekend against Vanderbilt. While the Gamecocks (3-6, 1-6) have struggled this season, Florida can not afford to come up with another lackadaisical offensive outing or else their College Football Playoff hopes will be in jeopardy.
“Hopefully this past week was a wake up call – that we need to really be able to bring it,” Redshirt senior tight end Jake McGee said. “We gotta be honed in on our assignments on our effort and really do what we can control and really not give that opportunity to the opponent to steal one.”
Florida has been able to cover up their offensive flaws with a suffocating defense on the other side of the ball. The defense has allowed only 14.6 points per game and held Vanderbilt to only 30 passing yards last week.
Ugly wins are better than pretty losses but the Gators hope to avoid being in the position to win the game on a last-minute field goal.
“Look to the next day that’s how you gotta do it,” Senior linebacker Antonio Morrison said. “you gotta go day by day, you just can’t jump. I mean those games are going to come. Coach Mac always says Saturdays are going to come. It’s what you do know what I’m saying, all the way up to Saturday.”
“I mean we got a defense that I don’t know how many times… (they’ve given up) ten points,” McGee added. “And that’s something that we need to try to score more to just help them out and sort of try not to give them a week off but give them some breathing room. “
With a win, Florida can avenge last year’s loss to the Gamecocks where South Carolina blocked a field goal and a last-minute punt in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime.
“Oh yeah I mean we all remember that game from last year,” said redshirt junior defensive back Marcus Maye. “So you know we are going out with a focus, you know with an attitude. You know we going in there to handle business.”
