The Gator women’s basketball team (19-4) is set to face-off against the Gamecocks (22-1) on the road tonight in Columbia. The Gators will be looking to extend their current winning streak to four games, while South Carolina will try to bounce back after experiencing their first loss of the season against top-ranked Connecticut on Tuesday.
Tonight’s game will be a matchup between two offensive heavyweights as Florida leads the SEC in points scored with 81 points per game, while the Gamecocks are second with 74.8 points per game.
Though Florida leads the overall series between the two teams, 20-14, South Carolina has won the last six meetings and are 6-4 against the Gators under head coach Dawn Staley. In their previous meeting last season, the Gamecocks dominated Florida en route to a 77-42 win at the O’Connell Center.
South Carolina guard Tiffany Mitchell has led the way for the Gamecocks this season just as she did in their win against the Gators last year. The senior is the team’s second leading scorer at 15 points per game and is shooting 42 percent from the field on the season.
Over the course of her last three seasons, Mitchell has helped South Carolina has win 39 of its last 42 SEC games. The Gators will face a difficult task tonight as the Gamecocks have won 23 straight SEC home games, with their last home loss coming in 2013.
However, despite, South Carolina’s remarkable accomplishments, the Gators should be optimistic about their chances as they themselves have toppled four opponents ranked in the top 15 this season, both at home and on the road.
Forward Ronni Williams has led the way for the Gators this season by averaging 11 points per game. She recently notched her seventh double-double of the season in a big win against Texas A&M last week (20 points, 15 rebounds).
Besides Williams, fans should also expect major contributions from guards Eleanna Christinaki and Simone Westbrook as they have played major roles in Florida’s recent upset victories against ranked opponents.
Tip-off for the game is set for 7:00 p.m. and you can here all the action on ESPN Gainesvile 95.3 FM.
