UF Women’s Hoops Loses to Georgia on the Road

February 22, 2016

The Gator women’s basketball team (20-7, 8-6 SEC) suffered its third loss in the last four games after being defeated by Georgia on Sunday afternoon, 74-63, in Athens.

Although Florida went into halftime with a five point lead after a decent first-half performance, the Bulldogs came roaring back in the second half behind the leadership of senior guard Tiaria Griffin.

Georgia shot 77 percent (7-9) from three-point land, with Griffin accounting for six of them en route to scoring 28 points. The senior also had eight rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action.

Gator head coach Amanda Butler says their breakdowns on defense ultimately led to open shots for Griffin.

Florida struggled to generate offense in the second half as they shot just 31 percent from the field. Forward Ronni Williams was the only player to reach double figures scoring in the game as the team failed to catch up to Georgia.

Butler says, in addition to the Bulldogs’ stellar defense, the Gators’ stagnant offense was also caused by their poor shot selection.

Florida will look to bounce back from this loss when it faces LSU Thursday in Baton Rouge.

Butler says she’s confident that they will play better in the next game.
