If you’re unfamiliar with the North Florida Ospreys, Florida’s opponent tonight in the first round of the NIT Tournament, the numbers they put up on offense might surprise you.
UNF is fifteenth in the country in total field goal percentage (48.6 percent), fourth in the nation in points per game (84.8), and first in three pointers made per game (12.2). Three different Ospreys shoot over 42% from deep, led by sharpshooter Trent Mackey, who drains over three triples a game at a 46 percent clip.
That’s a lot of firepower coming out of Jacksonville.
When you factor in scoring and three point shooting being weaknesses for the Gators, you could get a feeling that this game could end up a lot loser than many fans would expect.
As a No. 7 seed in the NIT, UNF is not without their own shortcomings.
They rank 319th out of 346 Division I teams in total defense, allowing 79 points per game.
So, if the Ospreys can get the game moving at the pace they desire, Florida could be in a shootout tonight.
Tip off from UNF Arena is at 9 p.m., with coverage on ESPNU. You can listen to the game on The Gator 95.3 FM starting at 8:25 p.m.
