Gators Men’s Golf Tees Off at Valspar Collegiate

The Florida’s men’s golf team is looking to keep the momentum rolling as they head into the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. The Gators are coming off of a positive outing in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas where they placed second out of 15 teams. Head coach JC Deacon was impressed with how the Gators finished in the competition.

The Gators had two players finish in the top 20 individually, Sam Horsfield (1) and Jorge Garcia (T19).

The Gators head to Palm City, FL to participate in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. The invitational starts Monday, March 21 and concludes on Tuesday, March 22. Ten of the teams competing, including No. 2 Florida, are ranked in the top 25. The Gators have competed in the Valspar Collegiate only once before in 2014, finishing 14th.

Leading the Gators in the number one spot in Monday’s lineup is freshman Sam Horsfield. In the last four tournaments, he has individually finished in the top three. Horsfield is ranked No. 5 by Golfweek, making him the highest-ranked freshman in the country.

In addition to Horsfield, the Gators will have two other freshmen in Monday’s line up. Jorge Garcia and Kyler Tate will take the number two and three spots. Garcia has tied for 19th in his last two appearances and Tate finished seventh in the SunTrust Gator Invitational.

Senior Richard Donegan and redshirt junior A.J. Crouch will round out the lineup. Donegan is the only player in Monday’s line up to have previously participated in the Valspar Collegiate. Crouch finished 12th in his last outing in the Gator Invitational.

The two-day stroke play event has a total of 54 holes; 36 are played on Monday and 18 are played on Tuesday.
