Marlins Fall to Mets 2-1

April 14, 2016

The New York Mets pulled out a low scoring 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins Wednesday. The reining NL champs started the season 2-5 and were on a four-game losing streak. With the win yesterday, they improved to 3-5, and the Marlins now have a record of 3-4. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Kevin Plawecki’s two-run single broke the tie and put the Mets up 2-0. The Marlins answered in the top of the eighth with a single from Justin Bour to bring home Christian Yelich. The late run wasn’t enough and the Marlins fell to the Mets in the final game of the series.

The staring pitchers for both the Mets and the Marlins threw six shutout innings yesterday. Logan Verrett, who started in place of injured Jacob deGrom, allowed three hits and posted six strike outs. Miami’s Adam Conley allowed four hits and had a career high nine strike outs.

Conley says he kept them in the game and on a day game with slow offense that’s all he could do.  Dustin McGowan wasn’t as great for the Marlins. He gave up two hits and a wild pitch to start the seventh and eventually ended by giving up the winning two runs. Marlins manager Don Mattingly says after winning the first two, the low scoring loss was not what they were looking for.

The Marlins have an off day today but will be back in action this weekend. Miami will begin a seven game homestand when they host the Braves Friday night. Wei-Yin Chen is scheduled to be on the mound and first pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
