After a disappointing 2015 season, the Missouri Tigers came into the 2016 season looking to improve upon their 5-7 (1-7 SEC) record last season. However, the Tigers have yet to take steps in the right direction so far this season. The Tigers’ record is 2-3, however, both of the wins are out of conference against teams they expect to dominate.
SEC GAMES
Missouri has only won one out of their last ten SEC games dating back to last season. This year they lost to Georgia 28-27 on a nail biter and got blown out by LSU 42-7. Missouri did have a chance to defeat Georgia, but the Tigers defense gave up a late touchdown with a minute left to true freshman Jacob Eason to seal the win for the Bulldogs. Unlike the Georgia game, Mizzou was no match for the LSU Tigers. Despite running back Leonard Fournette’s injury, LSU ran for over 400 yards against Missouri and held them to just seven points offensively. Head coach Barry Odom says LSU’s defense put pressure on the QB all game.
HOLD THAT TIGER!!
LSU takes down Missouri, 42-7, thanks to 634 yards of total offense. That's the most ever in an @SEC game. #ALLForLSU pic.twitter.com/PkfLXBnmPA— LSU Football (@LSUfootball) October 2, 2016
The Offense
The offensive struggle against LSU was a surprise for Missouri considering the Tigers were coming off a record shattering performance the week before. Mizzou put up 79 points in an absolutely dominate performance on the offensive side of the ball; they shattered the previous school record of 69 by ten points. QB Drew Lock tied the school record with five touchdown passes with four of those going to J’Mon Moore, who tied the school record for touchdown receptions.
Offensively this season, Lock has performed well throwing for about 1700 yards, 14 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The Tigers struggle is the run game where lead back Ish Witter is only averaging 3.8 YPC on 68 carries. Against LSU, Witters only carried the ball 11 times for 48 yards.
Up Next
Missouri will take on SEC East rival Florida next as they head to the swamp for the Gators homecoming game on Oct.15. The Tigers will have a chance to rest up before than though as they have a bye this week and Head coach Barry Odom knows this will be a good chance for his guys to rest up and get healthy.
