Premier League Recap: Arsenal grab 98′ winner, Spurs tie Man City

Manchester City 2, Tottenham 2

  • Leroy Sané (49′)
  • Kevin De Bruyne (54′)
  • Dele Alli (58′)
  • Son Heung-Min (77′)

Coming off a 4-0 thrashing last week at the hands of Everton and on a poor run of form dating back to the loss at Liverpool on New Year’s Eve, Manchester City was looking to rebuild some momentum against top-four opponent Tottenham. Despite being at home at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola’s men squandered a two goal lead in the second half, settling for just a point and leaving them with just one win in their last four Premier League matches.

Things seemed to be looking up for the home side early in the second half. After heading in to half-time deadlocked at 0-0 after 45 minutes of City domination, Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris gifted Man City two goals within five minutes of each other shortly after the restart.

At the 49th minute, Kevin De Bruyne spotted Leroy Sane making a good run behind Tottenham’s back four, and brilliantly picked him out with a long pass. Lloris came out and tried to punch the ball out, but completely whiffed, leaving Sane by himself to easily tap the ball in and give the hosts the lead.

Five minutes later, City doubled their lead through another Lloris error, this one more egregious than the first. Raheem Sterling found himself on the right wing and whipped in a low cross. The pass was slightly off target, too far ahead of a streaking De Bruyne, so the pass ended up in the arms of the diving Lloris. Lloris fumbled the ball however, and the ball bounced up enough for De Bruyne to stick a foot out and send into the back of the net.

Tottenham didn’t capitulate though, instead mounting a dramatic comeback to steal a point.

It started in the 58th minute with a run forward from right back Kyle Walker, who sent a curling cross to Dele Alli. The ball grazed the head of City defender Aleksandar Kolarov, but Alli was still there for the close range header. It marked Alli’s 11th goal of the Premier League season and his eighth in the past six games.

With 13 minutes left to play, after shouts for a City penalty were denied following what appeared to be a clear push from Walker on Sterling in the box, Spurs caught the hosts at the other end minutes later.

Christian Eriksen played the ball into the feet of Harry Kane. Kane, instead of scoring like he usually does, laid it off for substitute Heung-Min Son, who slotted it past City keeper Claudio Bravo to make it 2-2.

Bravo has now failed to make a save in the past 180 minutes of action, conceding six goals on six shots on target. He’s a major reason for City’s struggles as of late, as they now find themselves 12 points back of Chelsea and in fifth place. Meanwhile for Tottenham, the draw snaps their five game win streak in the league. The loss also dropped them behind Arsenal into third place in the table.
