Florida Gators women’s tennis will take on two SEC teams from Mississippi for their last home matches of the season. Florida will host Ole Miss tomorrow at 5 p.m., and Mississippi State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Following their 4-0 win last week against Auburn, the Gators remain ranked number 1, with an 18-1 record overall, being 8-1 in the SEC.
Last Weekend
Last week’s match was a tough one for the Florida Gators. Prior to the Auburn match, a few players on the team had been sick with a stomach flu and were not able to train. Head coach Roland Thornqvist spoke about getting back into the flow of things now that the players are healthy again. In addition, Thornqvist saw the light week of practice as a blessing in disguise. It allowed the players to rest their bodies and minds before the tough Auburn match. It indeed did seem like a blessing after the Gators won 4-0 against Auburn.
This Upcoming Weekend
The upcoming matches this weekend will be tough, says Thornqvist. Both Ole Miss and Mississippi State are deep teams, stated Thornqvist. He also mentioned that these SEC games late in the season are a true test for the Gators, and any team can defeat the “one loss teams,” in reference to his 18-1 Gators.
The Last of Florida Home Matches
The three seniors, Kourtney Keegan, Spencer Liang, and Belinda Woolcock will have their last home matches this weekend. Head coach Thornqvist said it is sure to be an emotional weekend for the seniors and that they will be missed greatly. He not only singled out their abilities on the court, but also their leadership in and outside of the team. Thornqvist also brought up a time when Kourtney lost to Georgia and an umpire admired her attitude when she lost. He said it was one of those times that you love as a coach.
