Gators Gymnastics to Compete at NCAA Regionals

The Florida Gators gymnastics team takes a trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to compete in the 2023 NCAA regionals. The Gators hope to earn their spot to the NCAA championship.

Gators Winning Season

After a great season, the Gators enter the NCAA regionals ranked second, just after Oklahoma. Florida finished the season with a 19-2 record, a regular season SEC championship and a win in the SEC championship meet.

Trinity Thomas has been a huge factor in success this season. Thomas is quickly approaching the record for most perfect tens in NCAA history. She has tallied up 27 perfect tens; just one more will tie the record.

Other standouts for the Gators include Leanne Wong and Kayla DiCello, who are earned All-American honors alongside Thomas.

This Weekend

The University Pittsburgh and SportsPITTSBURGH host the event at the Peterson Events Center. In one of four regional meets this weekend, nine teams will compete for a chance to earn a spot in the championships. Among Florida is Arizona State, California, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Towson, West Virginia, and Western Michigan. The opening round takes place Thursday, followed by the second round on Friday and the regional final on Sunday. The first round consists of two teams (Penn State and Towson), the second round consists of eight teams, and the final will have four teams competing for two spots at the NCAA championship.

Head coach Jenny Rowland talks about the team’s attitude going into the weekend.

The Gators have prepared for the weekend to the best of their ability. There are 20-time regional winners, including the past two seasons.

Looking Ahead

After each regional concludes, a total of eight teams (two from each area) will compete for the NCAA title in Fort Worth, Texas on April 13 through 15. Rowland is confident about the state of the team going into the upcoming competitions.

The Gators kick off this weekend’s regional at 7 p.m. on Friday on the beam.
