Tampa Bay Rays Sweep Opening Series Against the Detroit Tigers

The 2023 MLB season is officially underway with a Rays sweep of the Tigers.

Thursday was the league’s season opener as the Tampa Bay Rays took on the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers and Rays competed in a three-game series resulting in a winning sweep for the Rays.

Next up for the Rays will be the start of their three-game series against the Washington Nationals. The first game of three will start tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Last season, the Rays finished third in the American League East. The Rays have played in 26 seasons of the MLB resulting in eight playoffs and zero championships. Last year, the Rays made it to the wildcard round but lost both games to the Cleavland Guardians.

Former Gator baseball catcher Mike Zunino played for the Rays for four seasons (2019-2022) but now plays for the Cleveland Guardians.

Season Opener

This season is starting off with a three-game sweep for the Tampa Bay Rays. Game one’s final score was 4-0, game two’s win was 12-2, and for the third and final game of the season opener, the score was 5-1.

The Rays recently announced that RHP Colton Brewer will be exchanged to the New York Yankees for cash considerations. Brewer had signed with the Rays back in early December.

The Tampa Bay Rays inducted former coach and baseball legend, Don Zimmer into the Tampa Bay Rays Hall of Fame.

Zimmer was named the first member to be a part of the Rays Hall of Fame. Although Zimmer never played professionally for the Rays, he was a senior advisor for them from 2004- 2014. He was a two-time all-star and a six-time world series champion. Zimmer was also named the National League manager of the year back in 1989.

The Rays are 3-0 placing them as the top team in the AL East, with just 159 games to go. Last year the Rays ended their season with 86 wins and 76 losses.
