Florida Wide Receiver Xzavier Henderson Speaks Ahead of 2023 Season

Gators wide receiver Xzavier Henderson spoke to the media Saturday about his 2022 performance, the upcoming season, his experience running routes for Anthony Richardson on pro day and freshman receiver Andy Jean.

Henderson’s 2022 Season

Henderson said he feels like his 2022 campaign was “pretty decent,” adding that he wants to “keep building on it.” In 2022, Henderson started 11 games at wide receiver, recording 38 receptions for 410 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned seven kickoffs for 11 yards and 11 punts for 108 yards.

Henderson missed the last three games of the season due to an ankle injury. He said he was happy to see some of the newer receivers get playing time but having to watch from the sideline ate him up a little.

2023 Preview

Henderson was happy to hear that wide receiver coach Billy Gonzales was returning to the team. Henderson said that Gonzales brings an energy to the team that is contagious.

The Florida wide receiver room is special this year, according to Henderson. He is excited because all the receivers are competitive and can be leaders, adding that they are a very quick group from top to bottom.

Henderson would like to improve upon his kick returning in 2023. He said he is working on recognizing schemes and formations as well as breaking tackles.

Additionally, he’s focused on playing bigger as a receiver. The 6-foot-3, 198 pound Miami native wants to ensure that he capitalizes on his size in 2023. He said he is physically stronger and faster than he was last season, and he’s going to work to maintain that strength and speed.

Pro Day

On Florida’s pro day, Henderson got the opportunity to run routes for Anthony Richardson. He said it was an experience that he will remember for the rest of his life.

Andy Jean

Henderson crossed paths with freshman receiver Andy Jean back in Miami. He said he played with him in some 7-on-7 games and also saw him at track meets. Henderson said Jeans “was a speedster” in Miami.

According to Henderson, Jean is still making the transition from high school to college, but he is performing well. Henderson is confident that Jean will have a successful season and he said he’s ready to answer any and every question that Jean might have.
