Anthony Richardson Questionable for Week 3 with Concussion

Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Anthony Richardson is questionable for Week 3. The No. 4 overall pick suffered a concussion in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. Richardson left the game in the second quarter after he was believed to sustain the injury on his second rushing touchdown.

Richardson was off to a hot start before his exit, doing most of his damage on the ground.

The Colts’ signal-caller rushed for 36 yards and two touchdowns on just three attempts. He also went 6 for 10 through the air with 56 passing yards.

After the play he was believed to be injured on, Richardson remained in the game for two more drives before being ultimately ruled out.

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew finished what Richardson started, leading the Colts to a 31-20 victory and their first win of the season.

Early Health Concerns

This is the second time in two weeks that Richardson had to exit the game early due to injury. After suffering a minor knee injury in the season opener and a concussion this week, health concerns have began to arise for the 21-year-old.

Injuries are nothing new in the NFL, especially when it comes to dual-threat quarterbacks. Keeping dual-threat QBs safe, while still utilizing their rushing ability is a balance that all play-callers have to find. Colts head coach Shane Steichen is not a newcomer when it comes to finding this balance, working with Jalen Hurts last year and turning him into one of the best dual threats in the league.

Steichen said he thinks about the injury threat to running quarterbacks. He said that they have weekly conversations on when to be smart in certain situations.

“I mean, those things – I don’t know, fluke thing on that one,” Steichen said in reference to the play many believe Richardson got hurt on, “Hopefully, it doesn’t continue to happen.”

Looking Ahead

The Colts are set to travel to Baltimore next week to take on the Ravens.

With Lamar Jackson on the opposing sideline, the Colts hope to have their own dynamic quarterback behind center.

However, Richardson’s status for the game is still unknown. The Colts have not released any updates. If Richardson cannot play, expect Minshew to get the start.
