Late Comeback Helps Braves Even Series With Phillies

The Atlanta Braves evened their National League Division Series with the Philadelphia Phillies after a 5-4 win Monday night. The Braves knotted the series at 1-1 as the two teams head to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4.

Game 2 Breakdown

After being shut out in Game 1, the Braves needed their bats to come alive in Game 2. However, in the first six innings of the game, Atlanta’s bats were again no where to be found.

The beginning of Game 2 was dominated by the Phillies. Immediately after the first pitch, Philadelphia put the pressure on the Braves. They came out with four hits in the first inning, getting one run across to go up 1-0. Next, a homerun from J. T. Realmuto in the third stretched the Phillies lead to 3-0 entering the fourth inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth again extended the Phillies lead to 4-0.

Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler was lights out through six innings, not allowing a hit until the sixth. However, an error from Trea Turner allowed Ronald Acuna Jr. to get Atlanta on the board. The Phillies now led by a score of 4-1.

Following the game, Wheeler said he was frustrated he let the Braves back in the game.

Historic Comeback as Braves Take Down Phillies

Finally, the Braves found success at the plate as a two-run home run by Travis d’Arnaud in the seventh inning decreased the Phillies lead to 4-3. Then, in the eighth inning, Austin Riley hit a two-run home run to give the Braves their first lead of the series.

Riley said he knew the Braves could make the comeback and talked about the intense postseason atmosphere.

However, the Phillies again threatened in the ninth inning. Nick Castellanos sent a ball deep onto the warning track but Michael Harris II came down with it as he crashed up against the wall. The Braves relayed the ball to first base, narrowly beating a retreating Bryce Harper to complete the miraculous, game-ending double play.

The remarkable four-run comeback win ties the largest comeback in postseason history for the Braves. The last time Atlanta completed a four-run comeback came in 2010 in Game 2 of the NLDS against the San Francisco Giants.
