2 Former UF Baseball Players Crack MLB’s Top 50 Prospects List

Two Former Gator baseball players have landed on the MLB’s top 50 prospects list for this upcoming season. Jac Caglianone and Brandon Sproat are working to earn a spot on their teams’ opening day rosters. Caglianone was a first basemen and pitcher for the gators during the 2022-24 seasons. Sproat was a right-handed pitcher for the gators during the 2020-23 seasons.

Jac Caglianone

Drafted number six overall in the 2024 draft to the Kansas City Royals, Caglianone ranks 22nd in the MLB’s prospect rankings. Caglianone is ranked as the No. 1 prosect within the Royals organization. During his time as a Gator, coach Kevin O’Sullivan referred to him as a “Greek god.” Caglianone holds the record for most home runs by a Gator, hitting 75 in 163 total games.

During his time in Gainesville, Caglianone was able to pitch and hit. Currently, the Royals have utilized him only in a hitting role. The goal is to focus on one position, to speed up his process of making the team’s roster. Spending his first pro season in the minors, Caglianone had 28 hits in 116 at bats, driving in 14 runs. During spring training so far, Caglianone has a .375 batting average and one home run.

Brandon Sproat

Former Gators pitcher Brandon Sproat is ranked as the No. 46 overall prospect. Sproat spent four seasons with the Gators growing his game. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 7th round of the 2019 draft, Sproat decided to go the college route. Entering the draft again after his junior season, the Mets selected Sproat in the third round. Sproat decided to return for his senior year and then went on to get drafted by the Mets again, with the 56th pick in the second round of the draft.

Sproat earned the win in his only start during spring training. He pitched two innings against the Washington Nationals, recording one punchout and putting away all six batters he faced. Despite the performance, the Mets reassigned Sproat to minor league camp. He will look to keep building upon his game to earn a call up during the regular season. Sproat was named the Mets’ organizational pitcher of the year in 2024.
