Lights Out: Newberry Softball Remains Undefeated, Downs P.K. Yonge

The Newberry Panthers beat the P.K. Yonge Blue Wave 6-4 Monday night in a game shortened to six innings because of a light issue at the Blue Wave field.

Although P.K. Yonge grabbed an early lead, Newberry stayed consistent throughout the back half of the game to extend its win streak at 8-0.

The Blue Wave had a promising start in the bottom of the first inning after Newberry’s Gracie Mattson hit a single to center field to drive in a run in the top of the first.

P.K. Yonge then took a 3-1 lead in the home half. Two errors by Newberry pitcher Madison Krecker and a single from Alison Sanetz put players on first and second base. Senior Emma Mansfield then belted a home run for the 3-1 P.K. Yonge lead.

Newberry tied it in the fourth. Olivia Tharp hit a double to drive in Chloe Jones and she scored after a line-drive hit from Aubrey Mattson to make it a 3-3 game.

Newberry  held off P.K. Yonge in the bottom of the fourth and continued its momentum in the fifth inning with two runs for a 5-3 lead when sacrifice bunts played a role.

The Panthers made it 6-3 in the sixth on a triple by Mattson, who then scored on a bunt by Tristan Layfield.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sanetz hit a double to drive in Brianna Garrison and bring the score to 6-4. However, the Blue Wave were unable to close the gap before the game ended due to a light malfunction on the field.
