Oak Hall Baseball Off to Struggling Start
Oak Hall baseball’s struggles to open the season continued Thursday against the Chiefland Indians.
Following a leadoff walk to start the game, the Indians hit a double to left field to drive in a run and never looked back for a 10-0 win at Roger Maris Field.
The Eagles (1-2) have been no-hit while being run-ruled in losses at Newberry 15-0 in four innings Tuesday and in five innings to the Indians (2-3). They committed 13 errors in the losses.
Oak Hall struggled to find the strike zone against Chiefland, walking nine batters over five innings to keep pitch counts high and innings long.
“We just got to get better at throwing strikes and tidying up the defense,” Oak Hall coach Kevin Maris said.
Chiefland pitcher Tobias Cunigan held the Eagles to one base runner in the game after walking junior BJ Johnson in the second inning. The Eagles also struck out 10 times, including the final five batters.
Junior Darius Medley was a bright spot for the Eagles, pitching 1 2/3 innings and not allowing an earned run.
“I knew we were down and I had to go in and throw strikes,” Medley said.
And he did just that, striking out two batters in the fourth inning before holding the Indians to their only scoreless inning in the fifth.
The Eagles, shut out in consecutive games for the first time since 2014, look to bounce back at Saint Francis Catholic Academy (4-1) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
