No.9 Florida Hosts Florida A&M Seeking 13th Straight Win
The streak is still alive.
No. 9 Florida Baseball is looking to extend its 12-game winning streak tonight when the Gators host Florida A&M at 6:30 p.m. at Condron Family Ballpark in the second game of the midweek series.
The Gators will walk into tonight’s matchup with rested relievers in the bullpen after relying on just three arms to cover seven innings in Tuesday’s win over Florida Atlantic University. Weekend starter Cooper Walls pitched two innings after missing his scheduled start on Sunday, giving Florida more options on the mound.
The pitching rotation followed with a strong performance, shutting out FAU while limiting walks to three and eleven strikeouts.
“We are really starting to see the bullpen really come together,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said.
With no pitcher overworked, the Gators enter tonight’s game with a lot of flexibility. And, the Gators’ dominance on the mound will pose a challenge for Florida A&M, which has a 3-8 record and a .203 team batting average.
Despite the difference in records, coach Kevin O’Sullivan emphasized the importance of maintaining focus regardless of the opponent.
“I think it says a lot about our maturity,” he said. “I don’t care who our opponent is. It’s awfully easy to get up for the conference games or Florida State at home, or Miami, but we have got to take care of our business and have to show maturity and professionalism regardless of who we play.”
Florida’s offense also created scoring opportunities in multiple ways in Tuesday’s win over FAU. The Gators stole three bases this game and had 9 hits, including an RBI single by Karson Bowen. Outfielder Kyle Jones continues to be an example of this success, recording his ninth multi-hit effort of the season.
Florida could find additional opportunities against the Florida A&M pitching rotation that holds a 5.87 ERA this season and a team that has a .955 fielding percentage with 17 errors.
The Gators’ current winning streak marks their longest since opening the 2020 season and has helped push Florida up in the national ranking early in the season. With SEC play approaching and a weekend series against High Point around the corner, tonight’s matchup gives Florida another opportunity to maintain its momentum and continue building its bullpen.
