Golden Praises Chinyelu as Gators Build Momentum Late in Season
Florida men’s basketball coach Todd Golden believes his team is continuing to improve as the regular season enters its final stretch.
On “Inside Gators Basketball with Todd Golden” Friday, the fourth-year coach told Voice of the Gators Sean Kelley that the Gators’ recent momentum and highlighted the impact several players have made as Florida prepares for the postseason with one game to go.
Florida has built confidence with strong performances in recent weeks. Golden said the team’s success has come from better execution on both ends of the floor and continued development throughout the roster.
“We’re playing some of our best basketball right now,” Golden said. “The guys have really bought into what we’re trying to do.”
Golden also emphasized the importance of unselfish offense and ball movement, which has allowed multiple players to contribute as scoring threats. This balanced attack helps the Gators remain competitive against some of the toughest teams in the SEC.
A key contributor this season has been center Rueben Chinyelu, who is one double-double away from setting a Florida single-season program record. Golden said the coaching staff expected the junior to take a major step in his game.
“We felt like he was capable of making a jump like this this year,” Golden said in media availability Friday. “He’s one of the most valuable guys out there with the way he makes teams pay on both sides of the floor.”
Chinyelu’s ability to impact the game is a major factor in Florida’s success. His rebounding and interior presence help the Gators control the paint while creating second-chance scoring opportunities.
Golden also credited the team’s defensive improvement and overall chemistry as reasons for the Gators’ recent progress. He said players have embraced their roles and continue to focus on improving each week.
“They genuinely enjoy playing together,” Golden said. “That’s been important for us as we’ve grown throughout the season.”
With postseason play approaching, Golden said the team’s focus remains on preparation and continued improvement.
“Our job is just to keep getting better,” he said.
Florida hopes that continued growth, strong team chemistry and the emergence of key contributors like Chinyelu will position the Gators for success as the season moves toward tournament play. Florida tips off at Kentucky on Saturday for the final regular season game of the season.
