Have Past National Champions Typically Won Their Conference Tournaments?

March 11, 2026

The defending national champion Florida Gators enter the SEC Tournament as a projected No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season 25-6. On paper, the Gators seem primed to repeat last year’s tournament success, but reality may dictate a different outcome.

Four of the last nine national champions won their conference championship prior to entering the NCAA Tournament. To that point, one of those four teams is last year’s national championship-winning Florida squad.

The next most-recent instance came the year prior, when 2024 UConn, led by Tristen Newton and Stephon Castle, won the national championship after dominating the Big East.

To find the next national champion before UConn that won its conference tournament, one would have to look back two years before that, when in 2022, the Kansas Jayhawks won the Big 12 and a national title shortly thereafter.

But since 2010, there have been more instances of a national champion not winning their conference tournament than doing so. Florida’s currently favored to win the SEC, which could make it a less-than-likely candidate to win the national championship if it were to follow suit.

As it stands, Florida is the No. 4 team in the nation, red-hot with an 11-game win streak, making it a worthy challenger to thwart history, conference title and all.

Florida will play the winner of Missouri and Kentucky in the SEC quarterfinals on Friday.
