Florida Tennis Squads Return Home for Busy Weekend
Gators tennis is back in action this weekend in The Swamp. Women’s tennis is up against Mississippi State on Saturday at noon, while the men will play Oklahoma and North Carolina A&T on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
On Thursday night, No. 15 Florida (12-4, 7-3 SEC) swept Alabama (12-6, 4-6) 4-0 in Gainesville. This is the Gators’ eighth straight win against the Crimson Tide, and they are now 50-2 in the all-time series.
In doubles, freshman Brooke Black and junior Valery Gynina lost the first match. Senior Xinyi Nong and sophomore Nikola Daubnerova picked up a 6-3 win, while freshman Lucie Pawlak and graduate student India Houghton secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
Junior Gabia Paskauskas, Pawlak and Daubnerova all defeated their opponents in singles.
This was Florida’s third shutout of an SEC opponent this season, and it looks to add to this against Mississippi State (15-7, 3-7).
The Bulldogs are undefeated in non-conference play, winning three of their last five matches. In its most recent game, Mississippi State lost on the road 7-0 against No. 2 Auburn. The Tigers advanced early to secure the doubles point and swept in singles.
Historically against the Bulldogs, the Gators are 44-1 all time with a five-match win streak in the series.
Men’s Tennis
The No. 20 Gators (11-9, 4-5) are on a three-match win streak after their victory against Tennessee on Sunday. Florida shut out the Volunteers 4-0 on their court.
The Gators started off strong winning their first two doubles matches. Junior Henry Jefferson and senior Tanapatt Nirundorn and seniors Lorenzo Claverie and Pablo Perez Ramos defeated their opponents 6-1.
Juniors Adhithya Ganesan, Kevin Edengren and Jefferson finished their matches on top to secure the victory for the Gators. Now, Florida is 48-34 all time against the Volunteers.
After last season’s 4-3 loss against the Volunteers, the Gators were able to turn the table and take the win this season. Florida is looking to do the same on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with the No. 15 Oklahoma Sooners (13-5, 5-4).
In their previous matchup at Oklahoma, the Gators were swept, making the all-time record 2-1 in favor of the Sooners. The Gators will need to end Oklahoma’s win streak of three straight conference wins, most recently a team sweep over Alabama (9-11, 3-6).
Shortly after that match, the Gators play North Carolina A&T (10-6,1-0). The Aggies lost 7-0 to UNC Greensboro on Thursday for their first shutout of the season.
The second match of this weekend’s doubleheader begins at 5 p.m.
