Five Reasons Gymnastics Can Win a Title, One Reason It Can’t

March 30, 2026

Can Gators gymnastics finally bring home a title?

It’s a question that has come up year after year after the Gators fall short under coach Jenny Rowland. The Gators are coming off their fourth SEC Championship meet win under Rowland. There, the team beat the best teams in the nation, earning itself a No. 3 seed. Florida has shown a lot of potential and will be a top contender heading into Regionals

Here are five reasons why the Gators can come out victorious and one reason they can’t.

1. Bars Dominance

The Gators have been dominant all season on the bars and have one of the top uneven bar rotations in the country,  averaging 49.505.

In the SEC Championships, the Gators pulled off a season-high score of 49.800. Selena Harris-Miranda was the top performer with a perfect 10. Kayla DiCello and Skye Blakely scored right behind with a 9.975. The Gators have also seen key performances from Riley McCusker, who has scored a 9.975 in two meets. eMjae Frazier and Anya Pilgrim have also performed well, both scoring season-bests of 9.925s.

2. Proven Winners

Florida is a proven winner this year with a 20-2 record. The Gators have competed and beaten the best competition in the country. In the SEC Championships, the Gators took down six top-ten teams: No.1 Oklahoma, No.2 LSU, No.4 Alabama, No.6 Georgia, No.8 Missouri and No.9 Arkansas. In the regular season, Florida racked up seven ranked wins and two ranked losses to Missouri and Oklahoma. Alongside the Gators’ proven wins, Florida has an NCAA season-best score of 198.575 in their duel win at Kentucky.

3. Beam Consistency

In the past, Florida has struggled in its beam rotation, especially in big meets. In 2021, the Gators recorded a meet-low 48.7625 in the beams, leading to a fourth-place finish in the finals. In  2024, Florida scored another meet-low 49.2375, placing fourth.

Last season, the Gators averaged 49.316, but this year the team has improved, making the beam rotation consistent with an average score of 49.54. Florida has recorded two perfect 10s this year on the beam from Harris-Miranda and Blakely. The Gators have also not scored lower than a 49.400.

4. Depth

This season, the Gators have one of the deepest and most experienced rosters. The team is led by top performer Harris-Miranda, who has the top scores in all four rotations for the Gators. Blakely, DiCello, Skylar Draser, Frazier, McCusker, Pilgrim and Jocelyn Sasson have all scored a 9.500 or higher on a rotation this season. Florida also has eight members who have received All-American honors. This year’s team has the highest average performance at 197.714 since the Gators second-place finish in 2023.

5. Coaching

The Gators have one of the best coaches in college gymnastics in Rowland. She is a four-time SEC Championship meet winner in 2016, 2022 and 2023 and is a six-time SEC regular season champ (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023,2024). Rowland has three SEC Coach of the Year honors in 2016, 2020 and 2021. Under Rowland, the Gators have seven top-four finishes but have yet to take home a title in Rowland’s name. In her tenure, she has coached 24 individuals to 192 All-American honors and will look to add at the conclusion of this season.

Why the Gators can’t win

The Gators vault this year has been their Achilles’ heel. This season, the Gators averaged their worst score in their vault rotation with a 49.22. The Gators rank below the top 10 in their vault rotation and have had inconsistency week in and week out. This season, Florida has yet to reach a score higher than 49.725 on vault, and the low scoring has shown.

Florida’s loss against Oklahoma came from an early stumble in vault, recording the team’s second-lowest vault score of 48.975. Before the Oklahoma loss, Florida recorded a season low 48.600 at Auburn, then recorded their third-highest score of 49.375 a week later. This inconsistency could be the reason a strong Gator team falls short again.
