How Florida’s Early Tournament Exit Could Shape Its 2026 Roster
“Always look for the bright side,” they say.
So while losing in the Round of 32 is in no way a positive conclusion to this basketball season, it may provide Florida basketball a positive start to the upcoming offseason.
The transfer portal officially opened on April 7, the day after the national championship game. While most teams making a deep run have to quickly pivot to full recruiting operations, Florida now has the advantage of getting a jump start in the recruiting game.
The Gators currently only have one high school recruit, which is nothing new for coach Todd Golden. In Florida’s last four recruiting cycles, Golden has only landed two Top-100 players. That recruiting decision seems deliberate, as the Gators have heavily leaned on the transfer portal in past years. Among those: Xaivian Lee, Boogie Fland and, lest forget, Walter Clayton Jr..
It’s safe to assume Gator fans can expect the same this year, and now that the season has come to an end, all focus will be on the transfer portal. Last season, No. 5-seeded Michigan exited the tournament early in the Sweet 16. That gave the Wolverines ample time to hit the recruiting trail and pick up massive names like Yaxel Lendeborg, Elliot Cadeau, Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. That class ranked second in the nation, and all of those players make up Michigan’s top four players in points per game.
Before the Gators can fully attack the portal, they’ll need a clear picture of what the team will look like next season. Currently, Olivier Rioux is Florida’s only departure in the portal, and he played 15 minutes across 11 games. Lee has used up his eligibility, leaving an opening slot for the starting guard position.
Fland, Urban Klavzar, Isaiah Brown, AJ Brown, Alex Lloyd and Alex Kovatchev have all announced their return, giving the Gators momentum heading into the 2026 season. Seven players’ decisions are still to-be-determined. Key players like Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Reuben Chinyelu have all yet to announce their decisions, though most are expected to depart, either because of eligibility issues or for the NBA draft.
So while Florida’s season ended earlier than hoped, the Gators aren’t behind — at least not yet. With a roster already partially intact and weeks to prepare before many programs even have the opportunity to shift focus, Florida enters the transfer portal with a clear opportunity.
The pieces are all there, now it’s on Golden and the Gators to put them together.
