No. 4 Florida Softball’s Biggest Questions as SEC Tournament Nears, Answered

April 15, 2026

Three weeks out from the SEC tournament in Lexington, No. 4 Florida has strung together a successful run in a deep conference that features 10 teams ranked in the top 25.

Here are some answers from WRUF softball beat writers to the biggest questions surrounding the Gators.

What SEC Series has been the Most Important?

Andres Rodriguez: The Gators’ series against then-No. 13 Mississippi State has been one of the most pivotal moments of the season.

Coming off a heartbreaking series loss to Arkansas where the Gators lost in a rubber match to a walk-off home run, Florida had to bounce back. Facing one of the best pitching staffs in the nation, the Gators did what they do best.

In a tight and grueling weather-delayed Game 1, senior shortstop Kenleigh Cahalan broke up the Bulldogs’ no-hit bid with a two-run blast, giving the Gators the lead and the win with their only hit of the game.

In Game 2, Florida was overmatched by Mississippi State’s 14 hits, the most allowed by the Gators in 2026. Finally, in Sunday’s rubber match, the Gators walked it off in the seventh with a Townsen Thomas fielder’s choice.

Why was this series important? It showed Florida’s response to adversity. The Gators immediately bounced back from a difficult series loss and a tough Game 2 loss to win the series. Ava Brown’s comeback from her injury also goes a long way.

Audrey Layton: The Gators’ series win against the top team in the nation has been by far the most important games on their schedule so far this season.

To face a team that is as complete and elite as Tennessee, the same program that eliminated Florida from the 2025 Women’s College World Series, and not only take the series, but even keep the loss close is a huge win.

In this series, Florida capitalized on Tennessee’s pitching, hitting four home runs on the weekend, after the Lady Vols had only allowed 12 homers in the 28 games before coming to Gainesville.

Florida’s fielding also shined in this series, committing no errors in three games to increase their third-best .986 fielding percentage, which is third-best in the nation.

What Does Ava Brown’s Comeback Mean to Florida?

Rodriguez: Everything.

Brown’s injury at the Judi Garman Classic on Feb. 26 was devastating to Florida. The whole team and staff was heartbroken and distraught when the junior went down in tears.

Although it was never disclosed what Brown’s injury was, it was speculated that the captain would potentially be out for the rest of the season.

Against all odds, Brown made her first appearance in Game 1 of the series against Mississippi State, just 36 days after going down. The junior pinch hit in the at-bat right after Cahalan’s homer, bringing Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium to its feet.

Not only is her return a huge morale boost to the team, it also adds a key piece back into the lineup. Prior to her injury, Brown was leading the NCAA with walks and was batting at a career high level. Not only was she lighting it up offensively, but in the circle she posted a 0.49 ERA with a 5-0 record and three saves.

Layton: Anyone could tell you that having the best two-way player in the nation back on the field is an essential part to the Gators’ greatness.

Brown was out for 18 games, and Florida went 14-4 in that stretch. Brown has already made an impact on and off the field since returning against Mississippi State. Brown is a disciplined hitter who adds another solid piece in the lineup. She already has two hits and three walks in her four games since returning, and Gators fans can hope that she will return to the circle soon enough.

Where Does This Team Stack Up Against the Other Top Teams?

Rodriguez: Florida has proven it can hang with the best teams in the nation, but at times has looked worrisome.

Heading into the final month of the regular season, the Gators are 8-5 against top-25 opponents, including two wins against former No. 1 Tennessee. Pitching has been the Achilles heel of this team as they lost a 15-12 slugfest to UCLA and allowed 18 runs in one weekend to Arkansas, both top-10 teams.

An 8-5 record against the top teams in the nation is one of the best records in the nation, but Florida’s pitching has looked vulnerable in those five losses. However, in the series against No. 24 South Carolina, Keagan Rothrock threw a no-hitter Friday and the staff allowed only three runs in three games.

If the Gators bullpen can stay hot and consistent, they can hang with anyone. Pair that with Brown’s potential to pitch again this season, Florida should not be underestimated.

Layton: I think Florida can sit right up there with the top dogs, but are still missing a couple pieces to make them favorites in Oklahoma City. Florida’s offense has stayed in the top 10 in the nation in almost every offensive category. They’ve proved themselves against some of the best pitchers in the country like Tennessee’s Karlyn Pickens and Mississippi State’s Alyssa Faircloth.

However, the Gators pitching staff needs some more consistency and they also need the return of Brown to help relieve some of the pressure off of Keagan Rothrock, who has pitched in 29 of 45 games.

The Gators are definitely competitors, they just could use some more fine tuning and consistency to be able to compete in the postseason.

Sitting third in the SEC standings, Florida turns its attention to in-state foe Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday 6 p.m.
