Gators Baseball Drops One Spot in Rankings After 1-3 Week
The inconsistent play of the Florida Gators baseball team was on display again this past week. After defeating No. 5 Georgia on the road, Florida went 1-3 this week with a midweek loss to Bethune-Cookman and a series loss to No. 11 Auburn.
As a result, the Gators dropped one spot to No. 21 in the latest D1 Baseball Top-25 released Monday.
On Tuesday, the Gators fell short to the Wildcats 13-7 in Condron Family Ballpark. Florida started by staying even with the Wildcats 1-1 after the first inning. However, the Gators did not keep that momentum due to a meltdown on the mound. In the seventh, Florida allowed seven runs, matching their season high against Alabama on March 22nd.
After a day off, the Gators picked back up in Condron on Thursday to start a three-game series against the Tigers.
The series started off strong with Florida claiming a 6-3 victory over their conference opponents. Sophomore pitcher Aidan King pitched for the first six innings, only allowing one run, two walks, and eight strikeouts, marking his third consecutive win.
In spite of that, the Gators fell short in Game Two. Florida allowed three unearned runs in the top of the fourth, giving Auburn the lead for the remainder of the ballgame. Florida was defeated 5-3.
Florida fell to the same fate in the series finale, as four errors and cold offense led to the team’s downfall
Despite leading the game 3-0, the Gators surrendered eight runs in the final innings, including a five-run top of the ninth to drop the series finale 8-5.
Senior outfielder Blake Cyr had himself a weekend with four home runs and nine RBI in three games against the Tigers. But, the rest of the offense failed to back him up against Auburn’s arms.
The No. 21 Florida Gators will look for redemption against Jacksonville at home on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
