Former Gators QB Will Grier Announces Retirement

July 16, 2026

Former Gators quarterback Will Grier officially called it quits.

Grier announced his retirement Wednesday and shared an Instagram carousel with photos from his playing days with the Dallas Cowboys, West Virginia and Florida.

“Retired today,” he said in the photo caption.

The 31-year-old started his career at Florida in 2015, when he showed immense promise as a redshirt freshman. Grier led the Gators to a 6-0 start, including an upset victory over No. 3 Ole Miss.

He completed 106 of 161 passes for 1,204 yards in six games and recorded 10 touchdowns and three interceptions with a long completion of 77 yards. Arguably one of his more explosive games with Florida was against Tennessee, when he tallied 283 yards on 23 of 42 passing and two touchdowns. However, Grier was suspended for a year after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in an over-the-counter supplement.

He transferred in 2017 to West Virginia, where he revived his career, throwing for over 7,000 yards and 70 touchdowns and leading the Mountaineers to a national ranking.

In 2019, the Carolina Panthers selected Grier in the third round of the NFL Draft. He sat behind stars Cam Newton and Kyle Allen as a third-string rookie.

Grier appeared in two NFL games, throwing for 228 yards with four interceptions. In addition to the Panthers, he signed with the Cowboys and Eagles.

“Legend man,” former teammate Christian McCaffrey commented on the Instagram post. “Loved playing with you. Also sickest way to retire haha.”
