5 Takeaways from Florida’s 66-21 Rout of FAU
The Jon Sumrall era kicked off Saturday night, as the Gators cleared their first test of 2026 with flying colors in a 66-21 rout of Florida Atlantic. Amid a night filled with memorable moments, here are the biggest takeaways from the season opener:
Buster Faulkner’s Offense Dazzles in Week 1
If you could not tell from the 66-point output, Florida’s most in a season opener since 1994, the game plan worked pretty well in the first glimpse of offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s offense. The numbers ballooned deep into the fourth, with the point total not even being the most absurd.
The Gators’ 624 yards of total offense were the most since the team’s 70-52 win over FCS program Samford in November 2021 under Dan Mullen. The bulk of the offensive focus was via the air, as Florida quarterbacks connected with 10 different targets for 343 yards. Florida’s leading receiver in 2025 was the leading receiver in the 2026 opener as Vernell Brown III led the pack with six receptions for 117 yards, notching his first collegiate touchdown in the process.
The rushing attack complimented the air-focused offense, with Jadan Baugh leading the charge after yet another 100-plus yard game. While Baugh was the main attraction, Duke Clark left a lasting impact, surpassing his yard total from last year in half the touches and crossing the goal line for the first time as a Gator.
All in all, it could not have been a more picture perfect debut for Faulkner.
Sumrall’s Faith in Aaron Philo Warranted
If there were any doubts about what Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo could accomplish in Week 1, they surely were put to rest after his Florida debut.
Throughout the first offseason helmed by Jon Sumrall, the quarterback battle made front page news. It was no secret that the fight was close, with the first year Gator coach frequently mentioning the decision was not fueled by an “empty competition.”
Just under two weeks before the matchup with FAU, Aaron Philo was named the starter to take on the Owls. Philo’s consistency and knowledge of Faulkner’s tendency to put players in motion pre-snap served as the main separators between himself and sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. Both those factors were on display Saturday night and Philo proved why Sumrall’s choice was the right one.
Philo wrapped up his Florida premiere in the third quarter after a fantastic start that was accentuated by the redshirt sophomore’s efficiency, going 16-for-21 (76.2% completion rate) through the air with 275 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. In addition to throwing contributions, he rushed for a 3-yard touchdown and totaled 20 yards scrambling in the 45-point victory.
While it is important to remember that FAU was the team on the other sideline, the first peek of Florida’s newest quarterback is promising. If Florida’s offensive line can stay healthy and protect Philo when SEC play begins, things may be on the up and up for Florida as a whole.
Brad White’s Leaves Questions to be Answered
One of the biggest upsides to hiring defensive coordinator Brad White from Kentucky was his ability to convert blitz formations into sacks. White’s blitz plays brought down opposing quarterbacks 16.4% of the time, a mark that ranked third-best in the SEC. That appeal did not come into play against FAU Saturday night.
Florida totaled two sacks and six tackles for loss on only nine quarterback hurries, allowing Owls QB Caden Veltkamp ample time to convert on third downs during the first three quarters. While the pressure numbers are not necessarily bad, they certainly left more to be desired for Sumrall.
“Our defense was atrocious at times, quite honestly,” Sumrall said. “I don’t think we’re as good as we think we are.”
While the defense lacked on the front seven at times, they still were able to wreak havoc when necessary in the second half. Aside from Florida’s pair of sacks, cornerback Dijon Johnson picked off Veltkamp for UF’s second interception of the game and Brendan Bett forced a fumble to turn possession over to the Gators on fourth down.
On the night overall, Myles Graham led the way with a career-high 10 tackle performance, continuing his dominance from 2025. The junior linebacker led the Gators in tackles last season and steps into an even larger role as the main defensive leader in 2026, handling the responsibility well.
The defense may not have been perfect against FAU, but the unit will have one more chance to settle in Saturday against Campbell. White’s squad will need to bring their A-game from there on out, starting with a road tilt against Auburn in two weeks.
Sumrall Stunned By The Swamp Standard After Electric Atmosphere
As if the Gators performance on the field was not enough to make the night memorable, the energy for the season opener turned the intensity up 10 notches. Florida’s 19th straight home sellout did not disappoint and Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was seismic from start to finish.
Sumrall emerged from the tunnel, brushing his hand over the beloved alligator head statue for the first time en route from the locker room to the field. Leading his band of Gators through the Pride of the Sunshine’s formation in the block of UF letters, the crowd rose to its feet and gave the 31st head coach in Florida Football history a warm welcome that surprised him.
“It surpassed my expectations. I had pretty high expectations of what it was going to be like,” Sumrall said. “What an unbelievable crowd. Great support. They had a huge impact on the game.”
Florida’s fifth-highest attendance for a home season opener at 90,295 fans was a driving factor on multiple penalties by FAU, though Gator Nation showing out was not the only bright spot of the gameday vibe.
Early on in the first quarter, the band rang out a familiar tune, urging on the formerly beloved and recently controversial Gator Bait chant for the first time in six years. Former Florida president Kent Fuchs announced the barring of the chant in June 2020 due to “horrific historic racist imagery” associated with the cheer. However, new UF president Stuart Bell hinted at the return upon his hiring due to the chant being “meaningful to the Gator family.”
In addition to the first festivities of Sumrall’s tenure at Florida, a first ever spectacle brought the onlookers in attendance quite the sight to behold in the night sky. The halftime drone show displayed high above Steve Spurrier-Florida Field depicted images of the former Heisman Trophy recipient, as well as the iconic Gator Head logo and other orange and blue depictions.
The flashiness of Florida’s offense already made those inside The Swamp amped for the upcoming season. The spectacles turned it into quite the experience, leaving a buzz of enthusiasm in the air as the fans exited the stadium jubilant after the win.
Jadan Baugh’s Heisman Trophy and Doak Walker Award Stock Skyrockets
When it was determined Baugh, the 2025 All-SEC running back, would return to Florida for his junior season, the immediate reaction was how high the ceiling was for him in 2026. He may have already shattered any preseason expectations about his production this year.
Baugh ended last season on as high of a note as possible, running wild for 266 yards against FSU in the finale, the second-most by a Gator in program history. Baugh also became the 10th Gator to rush for 1,000 yards in a single-season in the process. The performance was always going to be hard to follow in the 2026 season opener, but the prolific back may have completed the task.
Baugh’s 160 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries saw him cross the 2,000 career rushing yard mark and eclipse 20 total touchdowns in his Florida career. He became the first Gators back to run for 150 or more yards and three or more touchdowns in a game since 2012, thrashing FAU for three runs of 15+ yards throughout his three quarters of action. The elusive runner also became the 10th fastest Gator to reach the 2,000 yard mark, doing so in just 367 rushes; one less attempt than it took Florida legend Earnest Graham to achieve the milestone.
The Atlanta native has been one of the best running backs in the nation since arriving in Gainesville in 2024, earning some serious recognition along the way. Tabbed as an ESPN Preseason First-Team All-American in 2026 and named to the Doak Walker Award Preseason Watchlist, Baugh’s season debut will surely turn heads in his direction for a bevy of honors.
If Baugh can keep up being one of the nation’s top talents in college football and produce at a similar clip in which he did against Florida Atlantic, receiving a brick adorned with his name outside The Swamp and some hardware are accolades all within the realm of possibility in 2026.
