Two Florida Legends Bound for Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame

Across 120 seasons of Florida football, thousands of players have worn the Orange and Blue, but only 65 Gators have been inducted into the Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame.

Florida football legends Emmitt Smith and Maurkice Pouncey will be inducted into the Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame on Oct. 30 ahead of this year’s rivalry game, alongside Georgia’s Brandon Boykin and Andre Hastings.

Established in 1995, this honor includes players, coaches and administration members whose performances, careers and contributions have helped shape the rivalry. The Hall of Fame honors more than 100 distinguished individuals, including Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel, Tim Tebow, and Fred Taylor.

It should be no surprise that Smith and Pouncey will now find themselves on that list.

Before becoming the NFL’s All-Time rushing leader, Smith became one of the most prominent Gators in history, contributing 36 rushing touchdowns in three years and 3,928 rushing yards, the most career rushing yards in Florida history.

In his junior year, Smith broke Jimmy DuBose’ single-season rushing record by totaling 1,599 yards. Smith spent three years at Florida and earned consecutive First-Team All-SEC selections before being drafted in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

Pouncey, a center, thrived in Florida’s Urban Meyer era, becoming a keystone for the Gators success while protecting Tebow, the Heisman Trophy winner.

Pouncey was the first player in Florida history to win the Rimington Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s top center, while earning Consensus First-Team All-American and First-Team All-SEC honors in 2009.

During his three seasons with the Gators, Florida held a 36-5 record, won the 2008 SEC Championship and the 2008 BCS National Championship against Oklahoma, and topped the 2009 SEC East Division. Pouncey entered the 2010 NFL Draft and was selected 18th in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Historical Gators have history in rivalries. Smith and Pouncey are no stranger to Georgia.

One of Pouncey’s most historic individual matchups during the 2008 and 2009 Georgia rivalry games was his fierce, physical battle against Georgia’s star defensive tackle Geno Atkins. Their intense rivalry in the trenches started back in Florida high school football and peaked during the 2008 match-up.

A rival that Smith couldn’t beat. Smith was brought down by the Georgia Bulldogs in 1987. He entered the game as the nation’s second-leading rusher, but the Bulldogs’ defense bottled up the Florida ground attack. In 1988, it was a similar game, Georgia’s defense had shut down the Gator’s offense, Smith was injured and had minimal impact due to a knee injury. In 1989, the Bulldogs bested Florida once again.

Florida faces Georgia in Atlanta in 2026 and Tampa in 2027. The game then returns to the City of Jacksonville in 2028 in the Stadium of the Future.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony takes place at noon at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
