CFP Expected to Expand to 24 Teams in 2027
The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand its field to 24 teams starting in 2027, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The Gators have finished in the top 24 of the CFP rankings four times over the last 10 seasons but have zero playoff appearances. From 2018 to 2020, Florida finished in the top 10 of the pre-bowl CFP rankings each season, showing how a larger field could have changed the Gators’ postseason opportunities.
The CFP began in 2014 with four teams moving on to the postseason. The expansion to 12 teams was approved in 2022 and first took effect during the 2024 season. With no denials or pushback, the proposed 24-team format is pending final approval.
“Constructive discussions with ESPN continued this week. … We will provide additional updates on the matters of the future format and media rights when appropriate,” the CFP said in a statement.
The proposed format would feature 19 at-large bids, four bids for Power Four champions and one for the highest-rated Group of Six champion. The top-eight seeds would receive first-round byes, while seeds nine through 16 would host opening-round games. The expansion may also lead to the removal of conference championship games.
A 24-team playoff format would give programs like Florida, which plays in the SEC, a greater margin for error. With two losses already this season, many fans and experts count the Gators out of playoff contention.
While the expansion could benefit programs like Florida, it also raises concerns about whether doubling the playoff field would diminish the importance of regular-season games.
Unlike many other major American sports, college football has traditionally placed significant weight on each regular-season matchup, with one or two losses potentially ending a team’s national championship aspirations.
Under the proposed format, teams with three or four losses might have a realistic path to the postseason. For the Gators, rivalry matchups against Georgia and Florida State may carry fewer playoff implications.
According to a survey from The Athletic, 70% of fans opposed expanding the playoff to 24 teams.
As the Florida Gators aim to reach their first CFP, a larger field can help achieve this goal in the near future. However, with 24 teams making the playoffs, a playoff appearance may no longer be enough to define a successful season in Gainesville.
