Florida Returns to Austin Hoping to Undo History
Florida fans may experience a sense of déjà vu Saturday when Florida returns to Austin to face No. 7 Texas. Nearly two years after a disastrous trip, the Gators, once more, are back with injuries, quarterback uncertainty and questions about their direction following two losses.
On Nov. 9, 2024, Florida fell 49-17 to the Longhorns in a game even more lopsided than the final score suggested. With DJ Lagway injured and Graham Mertz already sidelined, third-string quarterback Aidan Warner made his first start. Texas led 35-0 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 42-0 before Florida scored. Warner finished with 132 passing yards and two interceptions.
The lasting image, however, came from the broadcast. ABC displayed Athletic Director Scott Stricklin’s statement supporting coach Billy Napier while the Gators trailed 42-0. Two days earlier, Stricklin had promised Napier would return, citing his faith in Napier for Florida’s future success. The coach was 4-4 entering that game. He left 4-5. On the field, Florida struggled to prove Stricklin’s bet was intelligent.
This week brings familiar concerns. First-year coach Jon Sumrall’s team has dropped consecutive games to Missouri and South Carolina, outscored 83-36 along the way. Quarterback Aaron Philo is questionable with a shoulder injury, potentially leaving Tramell Jones Jr. to make his first career start in the same stadium where Warner made his. Running back Duke Clark is out, receiver Vernell Brown III is questionable.
There are reasons to believe this visit could unfold differently, surely. Florida opened the season with four straight wins, including a 52-28 victory over then-No. 4 Ole Miss. Jones has also received playing time, completing 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, although he has thrown two interceptions.
“Tramell can win football games, too,” Sumrall said this week. “Tramell is gonna be ready when his number is called.”
For Florida, the challenge is turning that confidence into a competitive performance. Another trip to Austin offers an opportunity to interrupt a losing streak and, more than anything else, keep a painful memory from becoming a familiar pattern.
