Gators Football Gains Traction, Returns to Rankings

October 18, 2026

Sometimes, there is a rainbow at the end of a storm. After falling to Missouri and South Carolina in blowout fashion, hope dwindled for Florida to take down a then-No. 7 Texas team that was motivated after an unranked loss.

Somehow, the Gators got out alive, displaying resiliency during the 27-24 win against the Longhorns and capping a one-week hiatus from the Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

After receiving votes and unofficially being ranked at 32 in the Week 6 edition of poll, Florida  (5-2, 3-2 SEC)  returned to form as one of the top-25 teams in college football. The Gators rose 12 spots to No. 20 in the poll released Sunday, marking the third week this season that they have been ranked.

Florida also rejoined the USA Today Coaches Poll at No. 24, similarly after a week-long absence. Although UF reclaimed its ranking, it was still slotted lower in both polls than the Texas (4-2, 1-2) team the Gators took down after entering as 11.5-point underdogs.

While there is still plenty of room for improvement to halt the roller coaster ride the Gators have been on, the change from the consecutive losses to Saturday’s effort is noticeable. One of the evident shifts was the intensity on the defensive end, holding the former top-ranked team to 24 points and sacking Texas quarterback Arch Manning five times.

That pressure generated by the unit amid the mounting negative noise during the two-game slide was certainly a positive takeaway for Florida coach Jon Sumrall as the team moves into the open week.

“You know what our guys did? They executed them with more detail, more urgency, more violence, more strain,” Sumrall said. “They finally took it upon themselves to play with the mentality.”

The Gators rejoining the likes of the SEC’s nine programs in the rankings were one move of the multitude for the conference after a stunning week in college football chocked full of surprises. Five of the top seven teams in the Week 6 poll lost on Saturday, the most ever to fall on the same day in the AP Top 25 Poll era.

Among them was formerly No. 1 Georgia, which suffered defeat at the hands of Auburn but remains as the league’s highest ranked team despite a drop to the No. 5 spot. Ole Miss is the only other SEC squad remaining in the top 10 after four teams were represented inside the shortlist a week prior. No. 11 Tennessee, No. 12 Kentucky, No. 13 Alabama, No. 18 LSU, No. 19 Texas, the 20th-ranked Gators and No. 22 Missouri round out the conference’s members with a number beside its name.

Florida has eclipsed its 2025 win total just seven games into the Sumrall era, reappearing in the rankings and living just one victory away from bowl eligibility. The Gators will get another opportunity to continue their ascent with a matchup against No. 5 Georgia (6-1, 4-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 in Atlanta.

“I want us to always win, but how you play the game matters as much to me. And today, we showed a lot of character, a lot of growth, and the fact that we fought when maybe things had not been going our way, and a lot of it was self-inflicted,” Sumrall said. “But just grateful for our guys’ response and the mental toughness and the resiliency to fight.”
