Gator Great Mary Wise Earns AVCA Hall of Fame Honor

October 23, 2026

Mary Wise’s legacy at Florida volleyball is headed to the Hall of Fame. The longtime Gators head coach will be inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Dec. 17 at its convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Wise retired at the end of the 2024 season, leaving behind a record of success that shaped Gators’ volleyball for more than three decades.

“I hope that with age comes wisdom and experience,” Wise said in an interview with Gators Athletics. “To do this for this long – having the privilege of coaching so many different players, from different backgrounds, different personalities, different talents – I hope all that experience helps as we grow each team.”

Wise recorded 987 victories and an .868 winning percentage during her 34 seasons at Florida. She earned AVCA Division I Women’s Coach of the Year in 1992, 1996 and 2017 to become one of three coaches to win the award three times.

Florida reached the NCAA postseason every year under Wise and advanced to the national championship match in 2003 and 2017, making eight NCAA semifinal appearances.

She also led the Gators to 25 Southeastern Conference titles, including 18 consecutive championships from 1991 to 2008 to set a Division I record for the most consecutive conference titles by a single program. Wise was a 15-time winner of the SEC Coach of the Year award.

Her impact extended beyond the wins. Wise coached 49 All-Americans and 13 Gators who earned 19 SEC Athlete of the Year honors combined starting in 1992. Among her standout players was Angie McGinnis, who won the award in 2006 and 2007 to become the first setter in SEC history to earn the honor and one of only five players to win it multiple times.

Wise also reached several coaching milestones. She became the first coach in NCAA history to win 100 consecutive games and 130 consecutive regular-season conference matches. She was also the only coach to win 90% of her matches during her first 20 seasons at one school.

Wise reached the 500-win and 800-win milestones faster than any other female Division I coach and became the first female Division I coach in NCAA volleyball history to record 1,000 career victories.

The 2026 AVCA Hall of Fame class also includes Jenny McDowell of Emory University, Candace Moats of Indiana Wesleyan and Mark Pavlik of Penn State.
