What Florida Softball’s Loss to UCLA Reveals

March 2, 2026

Florida softball’s first test of the season arrived Friday at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., against No. 8 UCLA. And the outcome didn’t go the No. 4 Gators’ way.

The Bruins knocked the Gators from the unbeaten ranks with a 15-12 loss. The game highlighted both team’s scoring depth and the defensive struggles that could challenge them this season.

The game quickly turned into an offensive battle. UCLA took an early 6-0 lead with six runs on six hits in the first inning, forcing Florida to respond immediately before things go out of hand.

The Gators answered with six hits of their own in the bottom half, highlighted by sophomore Taylor Shumaker’s opposite-field home run.

The Bruins (18-3) finished with 15 runs on 15 hits, while Florida piled up 21 hits, but committed three errors. The Gators’ 21 hits marked the most UCLA has allowed in a game in program history.

Multiple players fueled Florida’s comeback push. Shumaker finished with four hits to match her career high. With two solo home runs against the Bruins, she recorded her second multi-home run game of the season and the sixth of her career.

Ella Wesolowski led the Gators at the plate across the Judi Garman Classic split doubleheader. After the loss to UCLA, Florida came back with a 7-5 win against Loyola Marymount University. Wesolowski hit .667 with three doubles and a home run. Her three doubles against the Bruins tied a single-game program record and set a career high.

Florida’s offensive depth showed it can keep pace with elite competition. But Friday’s game suggested that run prevention may be the Gators’ biggest challenge.

After UCLA’s six-run opening inning, the Bruins continued to add runs in the second, third and fourth by capitalizing on walks, errors and big hits.

The matchup revealed a clear takeaway: against top opponents, defensive mistakes rarely go unpunished. With SEC play beginning this weekend, Florida will need to sharpen its defense if it hopes to make a deep run this season.

The Gators (23-1) have a quiet week before opening SEC play with a three-game home series against Missouri (7-13) at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium starting  at 1 p.m. Saturday.
