Ocala’s $10.5M Horse: Hip 1056 Headlines Historic Sale
A horse by the name Hip 1056 sold for an auction-high, record-breaking $10.5 million to Zedan Racing Stables, Inc. at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales.
Hip 1056 is the highest-priced 2-year-old horse sold in North America since 2006, second all-time only to The Green Monkey, which went for $16 million.
“I had no idea it was going to hit that,” Zedan Racing Stables bidder Donni Lanni said, per OBS. “I talked to everybody, and everyone had different numbers. Could bring $6 million, could bring $7 million. I never thought that, but that’s why there is a horse auction. You never know what they’re going to bring.”
The previous OBS record was $3 million, set when the same buyer purchased a future Grade 1 winner, Brant, in 2025.
Hip 1056 was first sold at auction in 2024 for $575,000, when he was less than a year old.
The colt’s pedigree adds to the intrigue. His sire, Flightline, was the 2022 American Horse of the Year, while his dam, Lucrezia, comes from a strong bloodline as the daughter of Into Mischief, a seven-time leading general sire.
Flightline earned $4,514,800 in his career and retired undefeated at 6-0.
OBS President Tom Ventura said Hip 1056’s pedigree made a bidding war almost inevitable.
“The best description of this horse is LeBron James coming out of high school,” Ventura said. “He was just that much ahead of the class. Let’s hope he keeps that and it translates on the racetrack.”
Hip 1056 arrived at Santa Anita Park in California on Sunday to begin his racing career.
