Buchholz Football Keeps Hold of City With Win Against GHS
Buchholz continues to dominate this high school football rivalry by making it eight consecutive wins Friday against Gainesville at Citizens Field. It marks the longest winning streak by either side in the history of this crosstown matchup.
Last October the Bobcats had a dominant win against the Hurricanes, shutting them out 44-0 at Citizens Field.
While Buchholz didn’t manage a shutout against Gainesville this night, 43-6 is about as close as one could get.
The Bobcats (2-0) took command on the game’s first drive when Ashton Norris capped a 10-play, 78-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run at the 7:29 mark.
Two minutes later it became 13-0 when a bad snap on a punt attempt by the Hurricanes (0-2) deep in their own territory was recovered by junior Caden Dowdell for a touchdown.
The momentum carried through the end of the first quarter. Junior quarterback Andrew Whittemore found senior receiver Dominik Harvey for a 14-yard scoring pass play to put Buchholz up 20-0.
Buchholz put the game away in the second quarter. Junior Joshua Menefee scored on a 7-yard run to put Buchholz up 27-0 six minutes into the quarter.
The BHS offense wasn’t working alone, as a safety by the defense put two extra points on the board for a 29-0 margin after tackling the GHS quarterback in the end zone.
Whittemore found Harvey for their second touchdown just before halftime with a 26-yard pass that made the score 36-0.
The rout brought on a running clock in the second half.
Norris had his second rushing touchdown of the night to put the Bobcats up 43-0.
The Hurricanes’ score came late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Calvin Comstock made a run from the 2-yard line.
Whittemore finished with 215 passing yards and two scores.
Buchholz coach Mark Whittemore, the QB’s father, made it clear to his team that the goal is to win the state championship and this was only a step toward that.
“A really good football team can not afford to not get better every week,” Whittemore said.
The Bobcats look to again sweep city rivalry games when they play the Eastside Rams (0-2) at Citizens Field at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
