The Florida men’s basketball team makes their fifteenth NCAA tournament appearance today as they take on Virginia at 2:10 p.m. Gator head coach Billy Donovan sports a 25-9 record in the tournament including both national championships in 2006 and 2007. Virginia, on the other hand, is making their sixteenth tournament appearance, but just their first under head coach Tony Bennett.
It is only the second time the two schools have ever met. The last time out, Florida lost to Virginia 62-56 in the 1992 NIT semi-final. This time around, the Gators go into the match leading the nation in three-point scoring, making an average of 9.9 per game. Virginia, however, defends well from beyond the arc holding opponents to just 29.5 percent from deep.
Florida will have to watch out for Virginia’s senior forward Mike Scott. The first team all-ACC selection is averaging 18. points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Gator head coach Billy Donovan says Scott is one of the most unique players his team has faced all season.
With a win this afternoon, Florida will advance to take on the winner between Missouri and Norfolk State. Third round action of the tournament continues tomorrow starting at 12:15 p.m.
Of course you can catch all the action right here on your home of the Gators, WRUF Sportsradio 850. Not only can you catch Florida in NCAA Tournament action, but we will be bringing you special NCAA tournament coverage all weekend long.
