Gators celebrate after a 2-1 win over Vanderbilt. Florida advances to the semifinals next.
The Florida Gator soccer team is moving onto the semifinals of the SEC tournament after a 2-1 win over Vanderbilt Wednesday night. This was the Gators seventh straight win including regular season match ups.
Florida fell behind in this match early after giving up a goal in the 10th minute. Vanderbilt’s leading scorer Simone Charley chased down a ball and took a shot from 17 yards out to give the Commodores an early 1-0 lead.
Savannah Jordan would respond with a goal of her own in the 25th minute. Meggie Doughtery Howard ripped a shot from 25 yards out that was deflected in by Jordan to give the junior her 20th goal of the season. This was Jordan’s 61st career goal moving her into sole possession of fourth all time in Gator history for goals scored.
The go ahead goal would come in the 75th minute off a corner kick. Senior Christen Westphal kicked the ball into the near post where Pamela Begic headed it in. This was Begic’s fourth goal of the season and her second consecutive match with a goal scored.
Next up for the Orange and Blue is Auburn in the semifinals this Friday. Auburn defeated South Carolina with a 5-3 advantage in penalty kicks after a 2-2 double overtime tie. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.
