Mark Richt fired as UGA Head Coach
Mark Richt has been fired after serving as the University of Georgia head football Coach for 15 years.
UGA athletic director Greg McGarity says that the decision to let Richt go came after UGA’s win against rival Georgia Tech last Saturday. The Bulldogs beat the Yellow Jackets 13-7, finishing their season 9-3.
Richt has led the Dawgs to a total of 145 wins and 51 losses during his time as head football coach. He is UGA’s second winningest coach. The Dawgs took two SEC Championships in both 2002 and 2005 under his leadership. Richt also claimed the title of SEC Coach of the Year during these two seasons. After 15 years at UGA, Richt says that he is going to use his time off from coaching to figure out what direction to go in now.
Coach Richt has not confirmed that he will be coaching again later on for another team. He says that if he ends up deciding to work for another team, he hopes that he is able to focus on specific positions and players, rather than be an overall head coach.
The Bulldogs’ season isn’t over yet, and Richt still has one last bowl game with his team. This game will be the Dawgs 19th-straight season making it to a bowl game. There is no clear opponent for the Dawgs yet, nor is it clear what bowl game they will be playing in. One thing is for sure, the team definitely wants to make Mark Richt’s last game with the Dawgs a memorable win.
