There has been some news regarding both Gator Men’s and Women’s basketball this week that will make any fan happy.

The Gators just landed Will Richard, a transfer student from Belmont University. Richard is a 6’5″ guard from Fairburn, Georgia. Richard averaged 12.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game this year for the Bruins; as a freshman. Richard’s presence will hopefully fill the void some departing players will leave in the program. Richard is just one of several players in the NCAA transfer portal the Gators have been in contact with. Golden arranged for Richard to have an official visit to the Swamp this past weekend and shortly after announced this on Twitter: “When you know, you know,” he wrote. “COMMITTED!”

Although Todd Golden has not been the new head coach for long, he is already making big moves and may ultimately be responsible for the great pickup in Richard. Crucially, he had this to say about Golden; “Our relationship is going really well,” Richard said. “I have talked with the head coach every day since I got into the portal. I’m definitely starting to build a really good relationship with their staff and I’m just looking forward to hearing their vision for me and how they would use me in their system. I’m looking forward to seeing the campus facilities and how life is in Gainesville on my visit.”

The Gators recently took a blow to the depth chart after the 2021-2022 season. Stars Tyree Appleby and Tuongthach Gatkek entered the NCAA transfer portal shortly after the season. Anthony Duruji is also departing but has announced that he intends to declare for the 2022 NBA Draft. At this time, Florida is vigorously trying to get star player Colin Castleton to return for another year. Although nothing with those players is set in stone, Richard could potentially be the key to a turnaround for Golden and the Gators.
