Montrell Johnson Jr. talks Gators football

The Florida Gators football team (5-4) defeated the Texas A&M Aggies (3-6) on Saturday, 41-24.

The Gators have a lot of momentum from Saturday’s win to bring into the last home game of the season against the South Carolina Gamecocks (6-3). Florida running back Montrell Johnson Jr. spoke to the media about the Gators offense.

Johnson on Gators’ Offense

Excited about the victory, Johnson said, “it felt really good to finally come out with a win and do what I knew we were capable of doing.”

Head coach Billy Napier told the media that Johnson was a “huge bright spot” for the team’s offense in the game against the Aggies. Johnson transferred from Louisiana where Napier used to coach.

When Johnson was asked about the rhythm of the offense, he said that Trevor Etienne and him work well together.

Johnson said he takes Etienne under his wing and reminds him to stay focused.

Napier spoke highly about Johnson and Etienne to the media. “Both are very consistent in their work ethic, their practice habits, their prep during the week,” Napier said. “They both have character.” Johnson has a total of 549 rushing yards this season.

When asked how the culture of the team has improved this season, Johnson said the adversity the team has faced has brought them closer together.

Johnson said quarterback Anthony Richardson has come to practice more confident. “He’s gotten more comfortable in the program since he’s played a couple of games. He knows the offense a little bit better and you can see him growing throughout games,” Johnson said. “He’s going to be great – we need him back another year.”

He told the media what changes he has noticed in his second year on the team.

The running back believes the team could play anyone in the nation as long as they work together. “The defense has to play along with the offense the team has to be one,” said Johnson. “The defense can’t have a good game and the offense can’t have a bad game. We all got to have a good game and play together as one… that’s what its going to take.”

Upcoming Game

Florida plays South Carolina Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at 4 p.m. This matchup will close out the Gators’ home games for the 2022-2023 season.
