Out With the Old, In With the New

It was a tough year in Denver with the Broncos going 5-12, missing the playoffs for the seventh straight year. However, Payton hopes to change that. During his lengthy 24-minute address at the combine, he discussed his intentions with the team.

First off, he said he wants to change the team culture with detail and discipline. Payton discussed how crucial it will be to pay attention to every small detail. Whether that be on or off the field, he discussed how changing the little things will bring an overall shift in energy to the newly coached team.

Payton also discussed discipline and his role as head coach.

Roster

When it comes to building a roster, Payton has not yet done the deep dive. He stated that the rest of the roster will be built after the combine with the help of GM George Paton. Although some things still stand uncertain, one thing is for sure: Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback. Wilson has been seen working with Drew Brees out in Del Mar, California, and Payton believes he will be able to get the job done. Wilson’s former head coach with the Seahawks, Pete Carroll, even commented on the dynamic between Payton and his quarterbacks.

Coaches

Payton made it clear that he likes Vance Joseph and his aggressive defensive. He thinks that Joseph has the attack mentality that will make opposing quarterbacks feel very uncomfortable.

Denver also recently hired former Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi to the same position. The hire reunites him and Payton. Lombardi coached under Payton from 2007-2013 in New Orleans as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach, and again from 2016-2020 as the quarterbacks coach.
